The IoA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control is a professionally accredited, postgraduate-level qualification that provides the specialist knowledge and practical skills needed for careers in acoustics, noise, and vibration. Taught in person at LSBU using industry-standard facilities, it is ideal for professionals or graduates seeking IOA membership or working toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Applicants are expected to hold a 2:2 degree or above in a science, engineering or related discipline. However, applicants with substantial relevant professional experience and appropriate knowledge in mathematics and physics may also be considered.

English language proficiency is required for non-native speakers, with a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with no component below 6.0), or an equivalent TOEFL iBT score of 80 (minimum 19 in each component).

This course is aimed at professionals working in environmental health, engineering, construction, building services, architecture, urban planning, or music technology. It is also ideal for recent graduates entering the acoustics consultancy field or those seeking professional recognition through the IoA or toward CEng status.

The course is made up of five modules:

• General Principles of Acoustics
• Laboratory
• Building Acoustics
• Noise and Vibration Control
• Project

These cover theoretical foundations, practical skills in noise measurement and control, and application in real-world contexts such as construction, environment and buildings.

On successful completion of the Diploma, participants will have met the educational requirements for membership of the Institute of Acoustics.

While the qualification does not in itself confer post-nominal letters, graduates are eligible to apply for Associate Membership of the Institute. The course also supports progression toward full professional registration, including Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

The course is delivered by an experienced academic team, including Dr Haydar Aygun, Professor Stephen Dance, Dr Luis Gomez-Agustina, and Dr Hyum Lim.

The course is taught in person at LSBU’s Southwark campus through a combination of lectures, tutorials, practical laboratory sessions, and supported self-study.

Teaching takes place in LSBU’s specialist acoustics facilities, which include full-sized reverberation and anechoic chambers, audiometric booths, and a fully equipped laboratory with industry-standard instrumentation.

Teaching dates are scheduled as follows:

Semester 1, starting 9th Oct 2025

Every Thursday during term time, for 12 weeks.  

Semester 2, starting Jan 2026

Week 3: 19-23 Jan 2026, Monday to Friday 
Week 4: 13-17 April 2026, Monday to Friday 

It's important to plan enough time for your Diploma studies, though the exact amount will vary depending on your background and experience.

As a general guide, the General Principles of Acoustics (GPA) module typically involves around 120 hours of study, including coursework and tutorials, while each specialist module may take about half that time.

With the addition of project work and laboratory sessions, the total commitment across the course is likely to exceed 300 hours. Many students find that steady, consistent study alongside teaching sessions helps them stay on track and succeed.

Assessment varies by module.

•  The General Principles of Acoustics module includes a 3-hour exam (60%) and coursework (40%).
• The Laboratory module is assessed through written reports and a lab notebook.
• Specialist modules such as Building Acoustics and Noise and Vibration Control are assessed by exams and coursework.
• The final project is evaluated through a report, proposal, and presentation.

All modules require minimum pass thresholds to successfully complete the course.

The Diploma is accredited by the Institute of Acoustics and satisfies the educational requirements for Associate Membership. It also supports future applications for Chartered Engineer registration.
